Artist's Statement

This image is of one of the fabrics I created in my Signature Collections class of Winter 2013 at UC Davis. For my collection, Denizens of the Deep, I explored and researched the complex textures, patterns, colors, and nature deep sea life, and created motifs based on my research. Inspired by surrealistic beauty of marine species, this collection unveils the mystery, fluidity, and complexity of life underwater through colors, surface textures, and silhouettes. Hand-dyed fabrics set the stage for layers of complex patterns illuminating various elements of marine life. Each fabric consists of at least five layers of hand dyeing which portrays the depth of oceans. The beauty of these fabrics will hopefully call attention to the degradation of our oceans that has resulted in the extinction of many wondrous species.
